Let’s get another review in here, this time looking at another fantasy anime from the recent Winter 2023 season:
Handyman Saitou in Another World!
This is an idea I’d been thinking about writing for a while now, and with some bigger names from the genre getting new entries, I think it’s a good time to go over what I believe to be the top 9 isekai anime. Why 9? No reason.
Something that I’ve seen fellow blogger Dewbond bring up a few times now is the idea of a “big four” of isekai, and I have to admit that I’ve thought about that same topic before too, because for the most part isekai happens to overlap perfectly with my favourite genre: fantasy. Which in turn makes isekai a genre that I tend to really enjoy.
It’s textbook… too textbook.
It’s textbook… only worse.
At the very least it is a case of being behind the times, I’d say. With the influx of isekai anime over the last few years, just checking all of the boxes isn’t enough anymore. If anything, the number of boxes that need checking has increased, but unfortunately Isekai Cheat Magician didn’t get the updated list.
Still, it’s an anime, and it does check some boxes.
Last episode featured a seemingly pointless duel between Cassim and Taichi. It ended with us learning that the rebellion had begun, despite a battle having already been fought.
Last episode the rebels attacked and then were defeated. They also tried assassinating Taichi and Rin but failed at that too.
I’m getting the feeling that the rebels aren’t going to win…
Last episode, Hajime ended up letting Sensei and the students with her accompany him on his expedition into the mountains to search for a missing party of adventurers, including a Duke’s son.
What will they find waiting for them?
Last episode Taichi and Rin were dragged into helping the kingdom stave off a rebellion led by the king’s brother that was looming. They were both hesitant to partake in a war that would end in people dying, but neither had the backbone to refuse.
Which brings us to the beginning of the rebellion.
Last episode, a large group of assorted monsters attacked the city. Despite what appeared to be thousands of them being killed, their attack continues!
Also, a pair of twins who were enemies and created an army of orcs with the intent of destorying the town randomly switched sides and joined Taichi after their orb broke.
Finally, Rin gave up fighting and was just about to be crushed by an ogre, when Taichi jumped in at the last second to save the day.
Last episode, Rin and Myura learned about a planned attack on the town that would consist of thousands of monsters. Taichi and the former assassin uncovered an underground cavern that is related to the coming attack.
And so, the attack begins…
Last episode, Hajime learned some ancient magic from the spirit of the maverick that once lived on the labyrinth’s 100th floor. He and Yue then spent some time gearing up and preparing for the next step in their journey – heading back to the surface, via teleportation.
Unfortunately, this is not episode 6, but episode 5.5.
What this means is that the episode is 99% recap, and 1% teaser for the next episode.
And so, I’ll just go over the super short teaser at the end of this recap episode, and we’ll be done here.
