Anime A to Z: I – Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu (Review)

Otherwise known as How Not To Summon A Demon Lord.

Anime titles these days seem to be getting more long form and straightforward.
Or maybe I’ve just paid more attention to them recently!

I was surprised to see that MAL uses the romaji title and didn’t expect to see this one for the letter I. Honestly, you could trim the title all the way down to “Isekai” and I’d be interested. However, being isekai doesn’t automatically make the anime a good one…

Anime A to Z: H – Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Review)

Recently finished up Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.

A lot has happened.
Or maybe not.

And that just about sums up my review for Higurashi.

Until next time!
Thanks for… all right then I’ll put some more effort into this. One of these days I’m going to end a post just like that though.

This anime has actually been on my radar for far too long. On my old laptop I had a folder of MAL pages bookmarked, and Higurashi was one of them – but I never got around to it. And then I got a new laptop and sort of forgot about it. So when I saw Higurashi while browsing for anime H, I had to give it a watch.

It’s definitely got a lot going for it!
This review will contain spoilers.

Anime A to Z: G – Genshiken (S1+S2 Review)

Until now, I don’t think I’ve watched an anime more otaku inspired than Genshiken. Or maybe I have, but no anime has made me enjoy watching the whole otaku lifestyle more than Genshiken. It almost makes me want to try attending an anime expo / event, buy figurines, and buy various manga.

What an anime.

I’m not sure if I would count as a true otaku, because the only otaku activity I actively participate in is watching anime – and writing about it here. Maybe this is enough to qualify, because I think most anime fans don’t also have anime blogs right? But I’m missing out on those figurines, manga, cosplay, and events! And then there’s the creation side of it all! Maybe we should all band together and create a manga? Haha.

Either way, Genshiken manages to take the otaku life and make it look really fun.

Welcome to Genshiken!

Anime A to Z: F – Flip Flappers. Could This Be Hidden Gem #2?! (Spoiler-Free “Review”)

Wouldn’t you know it, I’ve finished anime F!

And it was a good one.

Yet another anime reaffirming my decision to start this gauntlet! I’ll have to write some posts about moments like this once I’m done the challenge. 6 down, 20 to go. Time sure goes by fast when anime is involved.

So as I mentioned, Flip Flappers was great. I loved it. It was an excellent anime, and again, I did not expect it to be as great as it was.

Which means the real question here is: is Flip Flappers another hidden gem?

Geez, and I just gave the last anime I watched hidden gem status. I feel like It’s going to be a cheap award at this rate if I keep giving it out. But then again, that was the point in this whole challenge! To compile a list of hidden gems. Finding hidden gems is one of the more fun aspects of starting new anime I think, you just never know…  Unless it’s a popular anime in which case you’d probably have a good idea of what you are getting into.

Will Yomu bestow hidden gem status upon Flip Flappers?
Stay tuned to find out!

Anime A to Z: E – Eve no Jikan (Spoiler-Free Review)

I can’t believe I’d never heard of this anime! Could this be one of those hidden gem anime I’ve been searching for? Not that I know how “hidden” it really is. All I know is that I didn’t know it existed prior to this challenge, and I am very glad I found it.

I really enjoyed Cross Ange, but I’m not sure I would call it a gem.
It was great, but it had a mainstream feel to it. Which is totally fine, but it’s not a quality I’d expect of a hidden gem. That being said, it technically is less popular than Eve no Jikan is on MyAnimeList…

Let’s just say hidden gem is an arbitrary descriptor for my own purposes that is based on what I know, not what you know.

How does that saying go again?

I don’t know everything. I just know what I know.

That’s the one.

If you haven’t guessed already, I enjoyed Eve no Jikan quite a bit.
So lets take a look at what I enjoyed!

Anime A to Z: D – Devilman Crybaby. My Second Dropped Anime!

D – Devilman Crybaby. You know, I really don’t do enough research when picking these anime. This was a serious case of “I had no idea what I was getting myself into”. Then again, maybe I like that about my methods.

I made it through 4 full episodes, and stopped partway through episode 5. I feel like I deserve some credit for making it even that far – I actually stopped partway through the first episode twice before psyching myself up enough to get through it.

So Devilman Crybaby now joins that ranks of my dropped list, along with Divine Gate. That’s 2 / 362 anime dropped. Dropping an anime isn’t something I do often, although I don’t count it as dropped if I stop during or after the first episode alone, like I did with 3-gatsu no Lion. So Divine Gate isn’t alone anymore! How did this happen?

I’ll get to that, but first I’ll say that Devilman Crybaby is a very odd case.

Listening to this guy speak was quite the trial. He almost did me in.

Anime A to Z: C – Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo (Review)

I’ve finished the third of twenty-six anime in the challenge. For the letter C I watched Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo. Like Black Cat, I’d never heard of it before but decided to watch it based on the synopsis and tags. Unlike Black Cat, I’ve decided to get into spoilers for this review.

Speaking of which, reviews are relatively new to me. Technically I’ve been writing reviews for a while now, but I always called them my “thoughts” as opposed to a review. I’ve sort of realized that essentially these are reviews, and so I’ve decided to try and find my own style for reviews because I never had the mindset of improving until recently. Reviews are definitely something I’d like to write more of and improve at.

And one thing I’d like to improve on is focusing more on positive aspects of an anime. While I agree with the words I wrote in my Black Cat review, I feel like the tone I took was a negative one. Anything positive I wrote about in that review feels like an afterthought, or like I am just throwing the anime a bone here and there.

Which is why I’m going to try to make this review a more positive one. Taking a look at the good, and rooms for improvement. We’ll see how this turns out!

Cross Ange Spoilers Ahead!

Anime A to Z: B – Black Cat (Spoiler-Free Review)

Black Cat is an anime that I had never heard of until I was looking for something to check out for the A to Z challenge. It was an all right anime!

Like most anime, it had many ups and downs throughout.

So, let’s take a look at Black Cat. What it did right, what it didn’t. I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what I enjoyed and what went wrong for this anime.

The review contains no spoilers pertaining to the plot.

Let’s go!

No, I’m alright thanks for the offer though.

Anime A to Z: A – Absolute Duo. Possibly The Most Forgettable Anime I’ve Ever Seen Twice! (Review)

I know, I know. I started the Anime A to Z challenge with a harem anime… and a forgettable one at that!

It’s about the journey, through the good and the bad!

To be honest, his is actually a re-watch. I have seen Absolute Duo before. I believe I originally watched it in the summer of 2015.
But hear me out here, I had some reasons for watching Absolute Duo!

First, because I stumbled upon the OP on youtube, and I love the song:

That song is what first reminded me of Absolute Duo’s existence.

And that brought me to the second and main reason: I couldn’t remember a single detail from the anime. I didn’t even recognize the character pictured in the above YouTube video! All I could remember was that the characters were in pairs for some reason.

Which made me wonder – “why have I forgotten everything about this anime?”. Naturally I had to watch it to find out. I wanted to see exactly why the anime was so forgettable, to the point that I might as well have not ever seen it before.

So I re-watched Absolute Duo.
And here are my thoughts.

The Anime A to Z Gauntlet

All right! This is something I wanted to do once I had finished Legend of the Galactic Heroes. An anime A to Z challenge!

The premise is simple: watch and post about an anime that starts with each letter of the alphabet, starting with A. It can be a movie, OVA, long, or short. If it has a page on MAL, it’s allowed. As long as you start with an A anime, and end with a Z anime. Re-watching anime is allowed. Posts can be anything related to the anime: reviews, thoughts, analysis, et cetera.

For the purposes of this, I will be using the titles as they appear on the anime search function of MyAnimeList. I feel like romaji names can count too, but for now I’m going to stick to the names as they appear on MAL’s anime search.
