Let’s keep some of these easy prompts coming, cause I can quickly write up this post and then have more time to watch some anime before I sleep!

As usual, I’ll give multiple answers for this one.
First is the literal answer, which is difficult since my memory isn’t good enough to know whether it was Dragon Ball Z or Pokemon that I first saw. If I had to guess, it was probably Pokemon. And now, I wouldn’t say that I enjoy it. I have no desire to actually watch it, and I don’t remember very much about it. But it’s hard to say for sure, I truly don’t remember much about the original pokemon anime aside from the theme song.
Even if I said Dragon Ball Z, I’d have mixed feelings about it now. I love the world design, characters, and so on. But there’s that whole issue where a single fight lasts many, many episodes, and then there’s the constant yelling to power up aspect… At the time I never noticed any of that, but if I were to rewatch it now I would probably find the pacing somewhat slow or irritating at times, even if Dragon Ball Z overall is still cool as hell in my opinion.

And next is my first “anime”, because when I was a kid I never really thought of shows like Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. as anime per se. To me they were just cartoons I would watch, alongside others like Reboot, Gargoyles, Spongebob and so on. So in my mind, my first anime where I was actually cognizant of it being an anime was actually Vandread.
When I was in university, my roommate was really into anime. I had never really been exposed to anything anime related aside from the aforementioned anime from my childhood, meaning that at the time I sort of thought of those as children’s shows. And I don’t remember exactly why Vandread in particular was brought up, but I ended up watching it out of curiosity, and had a lot of fun watching it. So I basically began cycling through series after series on my own using MAL for ideas, and watching anime off and on ever since.
And it’s been four years since this post I wrote about my second watch of Vandread, but I think I’d still enjoy watching it again now. I’m also reminded of how well written my reviews were back then. Perhaps present me could learn a thing or two from past-Yomu!
And so there’s a fairly straightforward question answered.
I’ll now pass this onto you.
What was your first anime ever, and do you still like it today?
Until next time,
Thanks for reading.
Akira was my first and I still love it. Rewatched it a couple years ago and I think I enjoyed it even more. There are so many layers that you don’t notice when you’re younger.
Also, Vandread is awesome. I watched it a couple years back and was blown away by how well it held up considering how old it is.

I’ve never seen Akira, don’t even know what it’s about, but I also haven’t really seen many anime movies. I can only think of the Goblin Slayer one, and the Konosuba movie, that’s about it at the moment. I find that I’m a bit averse to older animation even though I know that when I do watch it I get into it fairly quickly.

Vampire Hunter D. Saw it at LosCon in the late 80s with my wife. 16mm projected on a screen. It is still a great anime today.

There’s a later movie, Vampire D Bloodlust, that is pretty good too.

The first anime I watched, that I actually knew was an anime, was Spirited Away. And yes, I do still love that movie and I will still happily watch it today!

I think my first anime would either be Candy Candy or Voltes V. I only watched a few glimpses of Candy Candy but I spent the most with Voltes V. It will finally have a live action adaptation this April in which it will be available in cinemas in the Philippines before it hits the airwaves. Do I like Voltes V? Yes, but not on the level of being a die hard fan. I guess my tastes changes as I age over the years.
