Sunshine Blogger Award

Been a while since we had this one on the blog.

Normally, I’d write some humble words about this amazing blog of mine and how grateful you should all be for being able to read these words, but this time I’m going to do things a little differently and skip that part. Because I’m very generous. Really, I’m the best when it comes to being humble about these things, let’s be honest.

So I’ll spare you all this time.

Post theme:

First off, I have to give some sincere thanks to Yomu of the Umai Yomu Anime Blog. We wouldn’t be here if not for him and his earnest efforts. Truly one of the greatest writers of our time, we’re really fortunate to have him here, blogging, like this.

Secondly, thanks to Ethan_07, from Anime as a Cup of Tea, for a nomination that has been sitting in my notes for far too long. Thank you for the nomination, and your patience.

And also secondly, thanks to Aiya, Yume-san, and Neru from Anime Tokoyo, for a more recent nomination that totally didn’t remind me that I already had a nomination from Ethan_07 in my notes when I went to pen this one in.

You both have my gratitude.

As for the tag, well, I’m tired of all these rules. So we’re going to gloss over the rules completely and jump into the questions, which is the fun part anyways.

Ethan_07’s Questions

1. Umbrella, or no umbrella on a sunny day with pouring rain?

Interesting question. I’ve never really been an umbrella person, which has gotten me into a couple pinches in the past. I’d say that back in Canada, I wouldn’t use one.

But here in Japan, I’d feel embarrassed to walk around without one in the rain considering literally every store ever sells them and everyone uses them and accommodates them (umbrella racks in every store, building). So here, I’d use an umbrella probably as I keep one in my bag and one in my car.

2. Remember any perfect day in your life?

Hard to say, it’s really all about perspective. If I’ve worked a lot in a week, then simply sitting around doing nothing for a day feels perfect. But repeat that “sitting around doing nothing” for a week, and it starts to feel not nearly as good.

I’ve done things that have left me lying in bed at night, feeling in awe of what I’d experienced that day. I’ve also had days where just feeling warmth on my skin, or drinking a glass of water has felt perfect. So it’s hard to say about a specific day. I’ve definitely had many perfect moments.

3. A fictional character (anime, manga, movies.. ) that you’d like to hug?

Too many to count. Pretty much every time I see a girl crying in anime, and the guy just sort of stands there next to her, or at best puts a hand on her head, makes me want to hug her.

4. Sunny, rainy, foggy, windy.. which weather do you prefer, why?

Rainy. I love the sound of the rain. Getting wet doesn’t bother me. I love how cool the rain is. I love the smells rain brings out, both the smell of hot, wet pavement, and also the smell of trees and grass when they get hit by rain on a hot day. The humidity doesn’t really bother me.

It always makes me happy when it’s raining outside.

5. Ugly characters with beautiful stories, or beautiful characters with moderate stories?

Beautiful characters with moderate stories.

While I don’t normally care much for animation quality, I have my limits. If the animation gets bad enough, or there’s something about it I don’t like (ex. March Comes in Like a Lion looking like it was drawn in chalk) then I can’t get into the story regardless of how beautiful it may be.

6. Name the anime/manga that you’re watching/reading now.

Trying to get through Shinsekai yori, but man it’s tough. 9 episodes in and it feels like a total convoluted mess. I’d already tried and failed to get into it once. Now I’ve made it further but even now I just stopped watching it and decided to write this post because I was bored.

Not sure if I should force myself to continue, or just write it off.

7. Some fictional characters that you’d like to slap?

Well, if they’re fictional, then there’s not much of a benefit to slapping them is there?

8. Horror-genre movies/anime/manga, what would be your top 3 picks?

I’ve been really trying to find more good horror / psychological anime to watch, but it feels like there isn’t much to work with in terms of pure horror.

  1. Higurashi
  2. Danganronpa
  3. ???

We really need more horror anime, don’t we? It’s all I want to watch lately but I can’t seem to find anything that really scratches the itch.

9. If you could travel to only one country in your lifetime, what would it be?

Only one country? Will I be trapped there, or is it more like my tourism will be restricted to that country only outside of my home country?

Ignoring the fact that I’m in Japan then, if I had to choose only one country that I could ever visit outside of Canada, I’d choose the United States.

10. Naivety in characters, what are your thoughts on it?

I used to get irritated at those naive male protagonists that seem like they are actively ignoring all of the girls around them. But then I realized that I was the exact same way in high school. Several times I was friends with girls who basically had to confess to me, or had their friends tell me, because I never realized. Or once a girl I’d never talked to in person confessed to me on MSN, that was a real shock.

“There’s just no way someone would like me that way” was always what I thought, so it was always a surprise when someone would tell me otherwise.

So now I’m sort of OK with those kind of situations.

But really there are all sorts of naivety in anime. Like characters doing really stupid things in a panic, or having really questionable mindsets. It really is just a case-by-case basis.

11. Eleven words that you like to use?

“Contentment is the key to happiness.”
“It is what it is.”

I like both of those phrases.

Aiya, Yume-san, and Neru’s Questions

1. Why did you start blogging?

I needed a way to get rich, and quick.

Just kidding. I had just quit my job and decided to try something new to fill my time, which ended up being the beginnings of this blog.

2. What is your favorite anime couple?

Nagisa’s parents, Akio and Sanae Furukawa.

3. What is your favorite childhood anime?

The only two anime I really watched as a kid were Dragonball Z and Pokemon, which at the time was nothing more than cartoons to me. I guess of the two I preferred Dragonball Z.

4. If you can go into any anime world, which one would you choose?

I think it’d be cool to live in the world from Dog Days. I’d get a good taste of fantasy, but the world is also very safe and seems very happy. I really love fantasy but realistically those kind of worlds would normally be very dangerous.

5. What’s your favorite anime movie and why?

No Game No Life: Zero. I thought it was even better than the anime, and I loved how much of a different world it built compared to the anime. I also loved how it eventually tied into the anime world. Great soundtrack too. I watched it twice in a row I enjoyed it so much.

No game no life zero riku and schwi

6. What’s your favorite anime idol group? If not, can be favorite band.

The only idol group I can think of is the one from Love Live! School Idol Project. That said, I think my favourite anime band is the one from Fukumenkei Noise. While I didn’t love the anime, I did really like the music.

7. What is your favourite dessert?

Chocolate chip cookie dough blizzard from Dairy Queen.

8. What anime series do you think deserves another season?

Problem children are coming from another world, aren’t they? is my top pick. Following that would be No Game No Life.

9. Who is your favorite anime character?

Izayoi Sakamaki from the Problem Children anime is one of my favourites. I always liked how he is very cocky and unapologetic, something that you don’t see all that often in protagonists. At least it feels that way.

I also really like the Goblin Slayer.

10. Which anime do you wish to see a remake of?

Mekakucity Actors. Same studio, same initial episodes, but this time, let’s remake it in a way that doesn’t completely rush the later half of the anime and gives a more satisfying ending.

11. How long have you blogged for, and would you still be blogging in the future?

It’s been a little over three years now, although the first 8 months or so of my blog weren’t read by anyone really.

I have no plans to stop blogging anytime soon!

Konobi Collette wink

And that’s it!
A quick 22 questions to go through.

As I didn’t post the rules this time, I’m not obligated to follow any, so I’ll pass on the nominations and all that. Honestly, coming up with the questions is the hardest part I think, kudos to you all who seem to come up with such great questions all the time!

Thanks again to Ethan_07 and the Anime Tokoyo crew for the nominations.

Until next time,
Thanks for reading.

  1. Living in the often damp and dreary Pacific Northwest… we have a word for someone that uses an umbrella – “tourist”. Residents tend to wear hats or coats with hoods.

But then our rainy season is cold, in Japan it’s in the spring/summer isn’t it?

    1. Yeah I lived in Vancouver for 2 years, so I know what you mean, weeks on end of rain in the late fall.

Here there’s a rainy season just before summer, and one just after summer (so I’ve been told). So yeah, it’s much warmer. I feel like there was more volume here though. In Vancouver it was basically just a constant drizzle for weeks straight, but here there are still downpours and the average rain is a little heavier. Somedays a hood would work, others it wouldn’t.
