Unfortunately 5pb. isn’t the studio but a producer, so I wasn’t able to binge all of SNAFU for a third time. In fact, this OVA is the only SNAFU-related media that 5pb. worked on.
I could have gone with Myself; Yourself, a romantic drama anime that I’d never heard of and could be pretty good. But then I decided to just go with the SNAFU OVA because I hadn’t seen it anyways…
In the spirit of transparency once again I’ll disclose here that I skipped over Licensor 4Kids Entertainment. Everything they’ve done is either a long shounen or a related movie. I could have gone with a movie but in the end I decided to just move on.
Anyways, as this is a single OVA episode, I’m going to treat this more like I would an episodic post, and just go over the synopsis and my thoughts.
Iroha asks Hachiman to meet up with her outside of school so he can help her with something. When she arrives to meet him, she declares that they are on a “date”, so she can practice in case she ends up dating Hayama. The two play ping pong, eat, and Iroha gets a few photos.
Back at school, club convenes and Iroha shows up mentioning that she wanted to start a school paper featuring local destinations and whatnot. She then shows Yui and Yukino the photos she took from the “date”, and asks if they can get more photos. And so Hachiman ends up going out a second time, this time with Yui and Yukino, to the movies, ping pong, and to eat.
The episode ends with Iroha taking a photo of the three in the clubroom.
Not bad, but I don’t think it’s as good as the regular season episodes. If anything this episode just made me miss Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. I guess this OVA takes place around the time that Hachiman is helping Iroha out with that school collaboration thing? Or maybe it’s a little after that.
While the episode was fun, there really wasn’t anything particularly special about it. Considering it’s an OVA and is self-contained (in that the story begins and ends in this single episode) it just is what it is: a nice single episode that doesn’t seem to bear much weight overall.
And because it doesn’t feel like anything really important happens, I also don’t have much else to say about the episode! Hachiman goes on a date, and then a group date.
By the way, the lengthy addition to the anime’s title is the name of the episode: “Surely, girls are made of sugar and spice, and something nice“.
That just about sums up my coverage of 5pb.’s Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku: Kitto, Onnanoko wa Osatou to Spice to Suteki na Nanika de Dekiteiru OVA episode.
A quick one, but of the options I wanted to check out the SNAFU OVA so that’s just what I did. If this were a shorter challenge I may have reconsidered, but I’ll feel no guilt for choosing a single OVA episode when I’ve got another ~1480 studios to go still.
That’s it for 5pb.
Onto the next one.
Until next time,
Thanks for reading.
