Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu Episode 5

We’re finally back into Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu, also known as The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan! While I’m slowing down my episodic posts, I decided to keep this one going. I’ve already covered all of Haruhi, may as well finish it all off!

That said, I’m going to try and keep these posts brief.

Synopsis

Yuki shows up at the clubroom to give chocolates to Kyon, but witnesses Haruhi in the act of giving him her own chocolate! She drops her chocolates in shock, and runs off. Asakura and Haruhi go to look for her, and Asakura berates Haruhi before realizing that the real blame lies with Yuki for running away without putting up a fight.

Eventually, Yuki gives her chocolates to Kyon but fails to confess her feelings to him because Tsuruya shows up. We learn that Haruhi also has feelings for Kyon, and Yuki says that she won’t give up. The episode ends with Kyon giving return gifts to the two on White Day.

Episode Thoughts

A cute episode. Not as much comedy in this one, although I think a lot of the comedy in this series is supposed to be inherent in Yuki’s hopeless demeanor. There was one funny moment where Yuki puts on a front and says that she was still planning on giving Kyon her chocolates, but then when Asakura asks her where her chocolates are, she can’t find them and gets this cute panicked expression on her face.

Oh the episode also showed the “John Smith” scene from Haruhi’s past for a few moments near the end. Not sure where they are planning to go with that, bringing the time travel element into things? If it’s just to try and get people interested by showing something from the original Haruhi, well, it seems sort of lame to me. Yes it’s the same universe, same characters, but I’d rather this anime stand on it’s own two feet instead of relying on scenes that we’ve already seen in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

In Conclusion…

As mentioned, it was a cute episode but felt a little lacking. I think the highlight of the episode for me was Asakura, who I’m really enjoying. The over-protective and assertive character that we never really got to know in the original Haruhi. It’s also nice to have that balance, with someone like Asakura who is actually willing to stand up to Haruhi. Really changes the dynamic away from Haruhi.

Until next time,
Thanks for reading!

    1. It depends if it has any impact on the show, or if they are just showing us random scenes from Haruhi just for the sake of it. That said, the odd scene here and there isn’t a huge deal anyways.
