It’s time for more Yuki Nagato. Or so you’d think, but actually, Yuki sort of takes a backseat to another certain energetic character…
Yuki and Kyon come across Haruhi collapsed in the snow. They take her somewhere warm, and then begin to walk towards their school with her. But then Haruhi realizes she forgot all of her stuff back in the park, where she had spent the night waiting for Santa in order to capture him. They go back with her, and then arrive to the literature club afterwards to an angry Asakura. After cleaning up all the Christmas decorations, they head home.
After New Years break is over, it’s back to school. Kyon arrives to the club room. It’s business as usual.. until he notices Haruhi outside. She spots him in the window and walks through the school to the clubroom. Then, she changes into some gym clothes in order to blend in. In addition, she gets Itsuki to change into gym clothes outside and also come to the clubroom. Haruhi declares herself and Itsuki the literature club’s branch members, or something like this.
After that, Haruhi and Itsuki begin showing up after school. Haruhi tries to corral Asahina multiple times, but is fought off by Tsuruya most of the time. Itsuki tries to follow Haruhi’s orders and is kicked away by Tsuruya. It seems that the comfy literature club has shifted into something much more chaotic.
And there it is. That Haruhi managed to weasel her way into the story. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it. Part of me had hoped that she would remain a background character that Yuki and Kyon just run into at times, doing wacky things. Instead it feels like she has arrived to just turn the anime back into her show. Seems like a bit too much.
Plus, she didn’t seem to really have any compelling reasons to show up in the first place. The Haruhi I remember is extremely callous and shows no kindness to strangers, so I couldn’t picture her just showing up at Yuki and Kyon’s school because they had met earlier. She would need some other sort of reason, like an alien sighting at the school or something. So it feels both like a bit too much and a bit too forced.
Still, maybe the anime will manage to shift back to Yuki somehow. Haruhi is just such a strong personality that I’m not sure how that’ll happen, unless she just stops showing up. I was sort of hoping this anime would be more laid back with less Haruhi and more of the other characters.
We’ll just have to see where the anime goes from here. I don’t think it was a bad episode, but I’m a bit concerned as to the direction it seems to be headed in, which is basically The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2.0. She’s already had her anime, let’s give Yuki and the rest a chance to shine here.
Until next time,
Thanks for reading.
