Shuffle! (Episode 5) – The Common Cold

Last episode focused on Nerine and her cooking ability. It was a pretty lighthearted episode, and to be honest, this series so far has been very lighthearted.

It doesn’t feel like anything too exciting has happened since episode 1..!

Brief Synopsis

And the lighthearted episodes continue, this time with Kaede.

Rin wakes up to another one of Kaede’s prepared breakfasts. He tells her that she should cut more corners and take more time for herself, but she takes this the wrong way and tells him that serving him is what she lives for, or something like this. He leaves it at that.

On the way to school Rin is ambushed by some more groupies. That said, the KKK joke still hasn’t gotten old. They end up getting blasted by Nerine and knocked around by Sia. Kaede couldn’t really do anything to help, but she takes a swing at a fence with her umbrella afterwards. It ends up getting stuck, and she has to leave it behind.

At lunch, despite Kaede having prepared Rin a lunch, he ends up eating the lunch Nerine prepared for him. Kaede stays late after school to learn a new recipe with Asa, and it’s pouring rain when she leaves. Naturally, she has to run home through the rain, and you know what that means…!

Kaede catches a cold and collapses while trying to make breakfast for Rin the next day. They both end up staying home from school, and Sia, Nerine, Asa all show up after school to make some food for Kaede. She doesn’t end up eating anything though. Rin takes care of her, and the two of them have a little talk with Rin telling Kaede that she needs to think about herself more, and to not worry about him so much.

The next morning, Kaede is cured thanks to medicine that Primula had been working on. Rin asks her why she was up so early, to which she responds that she had slept in an extra five minutes that morning.

Episode Thoughts

Kaede is such a cutie. Once again, we got another very lighthearted episode focusing on one of the girls, but there was no real overarching development. I don’t want to sound like too much of a critic here, but the first episode made Shuffle! seem like it would be more wacky. Sia and Nerine’s fathers are both examples of what I’d like to see more of.

I guess it just feels like they could be doing more with the premise of a demon and god princess living next door to our protagonist. Because so far it’s all just been very standard things, like cooking and studying. And I know, this is based off of a dating VN, so they are trying to show all the routes. But you’d think that even then they could spice things up a bit!

As it stands, Nerine and Sia may as well be regular girls.

I also don’t really understand the purpose of introducing Primula to Rin’s household when she hasn’t really shown up much at all. She doesn’t go to school, so we see her when Rin eats breakfast and that’s pretty much it. All we saw of her this episode was her grinding herbs for the most part.

In Conclusion…

Maybe Shuffle! is just a very “slow to start” anime. I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt here, because the premise is solid, they just haven’t taken advantage of it. At this point, while I was gunning for the harem ending, I’d be game for some straight drama between the girls or something. Anything to just spice things up and make for a more interesting watch.

We’ll see where the show goes… is Asa going to be the next girl to be featured?

Until next time,
Thanks for reading.

    I think it is.

    When they start…

Wait, I don’t want to say anything to spoil it. If only I had started my blog before I watched this series! Then I’d have a review posted!

I can only share my experience, and I’ll just say this: There are some episodes coming, especially the climax, that almost wrecked me. Well, to the extent that fiction can.

So hang in there! I’m really curious to know you think of those episodes!

    1. No worries about the “spoilers”, in fact I appreciate it haha. I’ve already watched / written about episode 6, so you’ll find a similar tone for that post, but I’m glad to hear that we get some exciting moments.

Regardless I’ll see this one through!

Know that you haven’t seen the series, without getting spoilerish… Yah, there’s a lot of slow burn in the opening episodes. But don’t blink, as there’s a lot of setup too.
