This is it, the final episode of the Fuko arc.
We’ve got to see a lot of Fuko over these past several episodes.
A lot of fun moments.
I didn’t cry, I swear.
There was just something in my eye.
Everyone except for Okazaki and Nagisa has forgotten about Fuko. The three go back to school to stay the night. Fuko opens up her birthday pack and puts on her party hat, they also get some drinks from a vending machine and matches from.. somewhere to light some candles. Eventually they fall asleep.
The next morning, Okazaki and Nagisa wake up next to each other in a classroom. After their initial surprise, they figure that they must have pulled an all-nighter trying to brainstorm ways to bring back the theatre club. Something doesn’t feel right about situation though. They go through the school day feeling confused and uncertain, as if they were missing something.
After school, they come across Kouomura-sensei creating a banner for the wedding. They ask him what he’s doing, and he tells them to look at it and remember for themselves. Eventually they piece together that it’s for Ibuki-sensei, and then… they remember Fuko, who has been right next to them the entire time.
The next day the wedding is held at the school, and after the ceremony in a classroom, Okazaki and Nagisa go outside to see all of the students that had received a starfish from Fuko were there. They all applaud for Ibuki-sensei and Yusuke. Fuko thanks both of Okazaki and Nagisa before disappearing, causing them both to break down into tears. Ibuki-sensei asks Okazaki why he is crying, and he tells her all about Fuko and how she managed to bring everyone there for the wedding. He gives her a starfish, and she too sees Fuko for a short time.
After the wedding, Ibuki-sensei thanks Okazaki and Nagisa for all they’ve done, and that as long as they hang on to their happy feelings, Fuko will be happy too.
Not only did I watch this once, but I went back to clarify something for the synopsis.. and something got in my eye again! It’s just amazing how powerful this episode was, despite me having gone into this with a good idea of what was going to happen. Mind you, I was wrong about what was going to happen.
We never found out anything about Fuko’s condition in the hospital, and on top of that, I didn’t think that everyone would remember the wedding like they did. It was great seeing everyone there for it. Fuko’s reaction, and her words after seeing her efforts come to fruition was great too.
I’m not sure what to say, this was a very emotional episode. I’m happy things ended up the way they did, because it was a happy ending. But I don’t know if we’ll ever see Fuko again, and it’s sad to see her go.
I guess this is just the Clannad way.
