Isekai Cheat Magician (Episode 3) – Expensive Fruit

Taichi and Rin have graduated from their training and have now been adventurers for a short while. So let’s see what sort of adventuring they get up to in this episode.

Taichi and Rin receive a guild summons and a quest to investigate stolen goods being smuggled into the city. Afterwards, they discover that fruit is becoming expensive. They visit a bar that night to try and fish for information, and end up wrecking some havoc on the patrons. Apparently the bar was a fence for goods, but they had no other info. After they leave the bar they are attacked by assassins. They manage to capture one while the other two escape using a classic smoke bomb.

The next day Myura visits them at their go-to cafe and invites them to form a party with her. They go on a quest to stop the operation that is stealing fruit from the farmers and fight some monsters at a fruit planation. Now the only question is, who among the farmers is feeding information to the unknown enemy?

Episode Thoughts

Another average episode from Isekai Cheat Magician.

I watched this episode, and even now I’m unsure if I enjoyed it or not. Time just passes watching this anime, nothing else. Nothing amazing, but nothing awful. Just anime happening in front of me. There’s no real excitement or tension, because the main characters are overpowered. And because the main characters aren’t very interesting, the fact that they are overpowered is almost a detriment. Because nothing is worse than an overpowered character that has no personality. Isekai Cheat Magician needs a serious injection of edge if it’s going to become interesting anytime soon.

What I will say though is that I got a few laughs out of Taichi this episode. I mentioned last episode he’s a total airhead, and he continued to prove that this time around. First of all, for some reason he feels the need to convert 1 silver to 10,000 yen in his mind, while living in a world that doesn’t use yen. What’s the point exactly? To make me laugh, I guess! They even compare the price to what it used to be, so trying to give people an idea of the value in yen was just comedic.

He also teased Rin for actually reading up on the world and learning about the various nations relative to where they are. Taichi would much prefer to just wander the land without a clue what was going on or where he is going, apparently. But hey, his favourite part of this whole isekai experience is that he doesn’t have to study anymore.

In summary, Taichi is proving to be a total clown of a protagonist. He’s overpowered, but that’s about it because his head is fairly empty. Which is why it’s a damn good thing Rin ended up in this world with him. He’s good for laughs, but not much else. Just a very average character with nothing really special going for him except that he says funny things sometimes because of how clueless he is.

What’s Taichi thinking about right now? Absolutely nothing.

In Conclusion…

The first two episodes led me to think that Isekai Cheat Magician was going to be a solid “7” anime. It’s just so average, with nothing about it standing out. But I’m starting to feel like it’s actually a solid “6” anime, or maybe worse. There really is a severe lack of anything interesting going on in this series so far, and I hope that things pick up soon, but even then I’m not sure how they’ll be able to do it with such a boring pair of overpowered main characters.

That slime anime is almost looking better at this point, although I’ll try to maintain some optimism that this doesn’t end up being the case!

Until next time,
Thanks for reading.

  1. I’m enjoying this, but you are right in that there isn’t a lot to recommend it other than it is easy to watch. Still, fun enough for twenty minutes each week.
I didn’t mind Taichi converting the local money to money he was more familiar with to understand how expensive it was. I do the same thing when travelling by converting a price back to Australian dollars in order to compare it and really understand whether I’m willing to pay that much for something.

    1. Yeah I get that but he’s converting a currency he has to a currency that doesn’t exist in his world. At no point is he ever going to be able to convert silver to yen, or obtain yen in any way, shape, or form. Whereas in the real world we can visit a bank and convert just like that, so it makes more sense.
Just a Taichi thing I think, because they end up establishing the silver per apple price prior to the price hikes anyways. He doesn’t like studying or having to use his head, so I guess his mind is still partially back in Japan.

  2. I thought the “Warlock’ showing up at least might lead to something now. I was happy they also limited how Mary Sue these two are just a bit around the Assassins, but yeah, after reading about it at Karandi’s blog I looked into it and it’s just some casual fun.
I am one of the idiots however that watched trough the entire first 20 or so episodes of Hitman Reborn before I found that any fun, so perhaps not the best example.

    1. I sat through 24 episodes of the isekai slime anime while finding it boring and underwhelming the entire time, and I’ll stick with Isekai Cheat as well.

I just need to make sure I adjust my expectations as I go so that I can still get some enjoyment out of certain aspects. The warlock and the captured assassin might lead to something more interesting for sure.
