Celebrating The Achievement Unlocked Award!

You know, there’s been a bit of a tag post drought so far in 2019!
So it’s nice to get another one after what feels like a very long time!

Let’s see… it’s been a little over two months since I’ve published a tag post / award on this blog.  Well, it feels like a long time at least. But that’s about to change, because I’ve been nominated for a few awards recently!

The award this time around is the Achievement Unlocked Award.
Nomination is courtesy of Lynn Sheridan! Thanks!
(Check out our Sankarea Collaboration! First post here.).

I believe this is referencing something that started with the Nintendo where a pop up would appear saying “achievement unlocked”. Probably from one of those Pokemans games. Since then it’s become a me-me on the internet; just a bit of background info for all you kids out there…

I jest of course, the Xbox 360 was my premier gaming choice for most of my high school life! I wasn’t much of an achievement hunter though. My most played games would have been Call of Duty 4, Civilization Revolution, and Fight Night Round 4. I also loved Tales of Vesperia, Beautiful Katamari, The Bigs 2, and many, many other games. It’s the last console I’ve ever owned – I play games exclusively on PC now.

Enough rambling though, let’s get to this particular award!

The Achievement Unlocked Award is for anyone who would fit into geeky blogging that goes above and beyond in our niche. Whether you are all about video games, DIY across all fandoms, sharing your cosplay journey, or anywhere in between, it all fits and is worth celebrating. — Michelle @ A Geek Girl’s Guide

I always preferred to go by “nerd”, but I guess “geek” works too.
I also like the name “four-eyes”. Always makes me laugh.

The Rules

There are 5 standard questions that do not change, that everyone has to answer. And then there are 5 questions that change with each nomination. So in addition to the 5 standard questions, there are 5 questions that Lynn has come up with. And then I’ll be replacing those 5 with my own 5 questions for the people I nominate, and so on..

Here are all the questions:

Standard Questions

  • Why did you start your blog?
  • What are your favourite topics to write about?
  • What have you learned since you started your blog?
  • What do you love about being a geeky blog?
  • Where would you like to see your blog go in the future?

Lynn’s Questions

  • What’s the geekiest thing you’ve ever done?
  • If you could go back in time, what would you have done differently with your blog?
  • If money wasn’t an option, what is the one thing you’d buy yourself?
  • What’s your favourite blog post that you wrote?
  • What’s your favourite blog post written by someone else?

All right, here we go!

Standard Questions

Why did you start your blog?

Long story short, a few years back when I was living in Vancouver I had quit my inventory control job working for a very large company. They “stabbed me in the back” so to speak, and I could no longer work there in good conscience, so I quit. I created the Umai Yomu Anime Blog as something I could do in my newly found free-time. At the time I felt betrayed and was apprehensive to go work for another company, so instead I pursued starting a business with some friends. The business stuff never really worked out, but the blog is still here at least!

What are your favourite topics to write about?

Well, I really love writing about geopolitics with a focus on economics…

Ha. We write about anime here on the Umai Yomu Anime Blog, and I couldn’t think of a more enjoyable topic to cover!

What have you learned since you started your blog?

Many things! Here are probably the two most important:

Use tags! I didn’t know WordPress had tags, and didn’t get any views on this blog for almost an entire year! Once I started using them, all of the sudden I started getting views! It’s crazy, but that’s how it went. So don’t forget to use tags.

Interact with the community. If I had just browsed other anime blogs, I would have quickly realized that tags were a thing, and even if I hadn’t, interacting with everyone else in the blogging community is just a great way to learn and grow. I browse the anime tag everyday, and there’s always great content to interact with. We can all help each other out, and get some good enjoyment out of the deal!

What do you love about being a geeky blog?

Hard to say. I’ve never written for any other blog, so I don’t have any experience on what a non-geeky blog would feel like to compare with.

I think blogging in general is just a great activity. I’d like to think it’s improved my writing ability to some degree, and it’s great to be able to put my anime thoughts somewhere, because none of my personal friends watch anime!

Where would you like to see your blog go in the future?

Well, I think monetization is in the back of almost every blogger’s mind at some point. That’s likely still many years off though, if I ever seriously look into it.

Realistically, there are two more immediate concerns:

  • Moving over to self-hosting this blog, so I can use plugins and ditch all the WordPress ads that currently plague my site.
  • Generate more traffic through Google.

Other than that, I’d just like to keep blogging and remain as a part of the aniblogging community.

Lynn’s Questions

What’s the geekiest thing you’ve ever done?

Well, here’s a story for you.

Instead of paying the exorbitant fee to go to prom in my last year of highschool, a group of friends and I went to laser tag for the night. We even bought highlighters and coloured our faces with military-esque patterns so that they would glow in the dark. I think there were “rules” where you weren’t allowed to duck and cover, but we went all-out with our tactics.

One round a group of little kids showed up, and we schooled them with our superior military tactics. Luckily they didn’t complain that we were breaking the rules (by teaming up, ducking and covering, using ambush tactics, etc.), but I think that’s just because none of them really knew the rules. Either way, it was a fun night.

If you could go back in time, what would you have done differently with your blog?

Buy bitcoin.
Oh, with my blog?

I would have used WordPress tags from the start, and I would have interacted with other blogs from the start! I’ll be getting a “two-year anniversary” notification on WordPress soon, but my blog has only really been “on the radar” for one. It’s weird to think about. Don’t make the same mistakes I did!

If money wasn’t an option, what is the one thing you’d buy yourself?

That’s a tough one. I don’t really care about money once my basic needs are met.
Even tougher is that it has to be for myself!

I’ll just go with ordering a pizza, because I generally only eat frozen pizza. Ordering out is just so expensive in comparison, that I normally can’t justify it. That and I’ve grown to really like frozen pizza. But I guess I could try ordering pizza for once, now that money isn’t an option. The most expensive pizza in town!

What’s your favourite blog post that you wrote?

Excellent question Lynn.

Hard to pinpoint my absoute favourite, but one of my favourites is definitely my short story that I wrote for the Create-A-Story tag. If you haven’t read it, you really should. You can find it here: The Coolest Kid In School – My (Chuuni) High School StoryA classic story to be told throughout the ages. It still gets me when I read it now. That might just be the peak of my writing career. It’s all downhill from there.

What’s your favourite blog post written by someone else?

Instead of one post, I’ll provide you all with a series of posts, starting with the first post here:

TPAB’s Top Ten: Things I Learned From Six Years of Blogging and Reviewing (Part 1 of 10)

It’s a great series of posts by TPAB talking about his interactions with the community, experiences with collaborations, milestones, et cetera. TPAB was the first one to comment on one of my posts, and then when I visited his blog, I was treated to this series of posts. It helped me to realize the importance and value of interacting with the blogging community. It’s almost been exactly 1 year since I read this, based on my comment from May 8, 2018. This was before I even changed my WordPress name to just “Yomu”!

I’ve pingbacked it before, and I’ll pingback it again with this post!
TPAB, I’m not letting up with these pingbacks! I’m just gettin’ started!

Nominations & Questions

All right, this has turned into a fairly long post due to the sheer number of questions. It’s time for the best part, nominating more blogs for the award!

I am going to nominate:

I’ll put the standard questions as well as my own questions below:

Standard Questions

  • Why did you start your blog?
  • What are your favourite topics to write about?
  • What have you learned since you started your blog?
  • What do you love about being a geeky blog?
  • Where would you like to see your blog go in the future?

My Questions

  • What is your favourite “geeky” song or soundtrack?
  • What got you into watching anime?
  • What would you consider your most “outrageous” post?
  • What’s your favourite ice cream flavour?
  • Cookies, or doughnuts? Why?

I look forward to your answers (especially the last question)!

Konobi Usami Mizuki thumbs up

Once again I’d like to thank Lynn Sheridan for the nomination.
Could you all do me a favour and check out the new banner he put up on his website? Maybe let him know what you think in the comments of one of his posts?
I’d appreciate it.

And that does it for this post.
Stay tuned as I have another tag post slotted for next Sunday as well!

Until next time!
Thanks for reading.
