Wouldn’t you know it, I’ve finished anime F!
And it was a good one.
Yet another anime reaffirming my decision to start this gauntlet! I’ll have to write some posts about moments like this once I’m done the challenge. 6 down, 20 to go. Time sure goes by fast when anime is involved.
So as I mentioned, Flip Flappers was great. I loved it. It was an excellent anime, and again, I did not expect it to be as great as it was.
Which means the real question here is: is Flip Flappers another hidden gem?
Geez, and I just gave the last anime I watched hidden gem status. I feel like It’s going to be a cheap award at this rate if I keep giving it out. But then again, that was the point in this whole challenge! To compile a list of hidden gems. Finding hidden gems is one of the more fun aspects of starting new anime I think, you just never know… Unless it’s a popular anime in which case you’d probably have a good idea of what you are getting into.
Will Yomu bestow hidden gem status upon Flip Flappers?
Stay tuned to find out!
Flip Flappers really is something else. There were quite a few moments that made me “wow”. I even have three screencaps that I titled “wow”. I think wow is the best word to describe Flip Flappers. “Wow” is what I think to myself when I think about the anime.
I’ll try my best to explain this.
Remember that exciting feeling you felt during Made in Abyss when you are treated to more of the Abyss’ unknown and mysterious depths?
And those encouraging and fun moments watching those four girls bond and adventure to Antarctica in A Place Further Than The Universe?
And finally, do you remember all of those brilliant and vibrant colours in Mekakucity Actors that made it a real artistic treat to watch?
That’s Flip Flappers! Those three aspects, rolled into a single anime. That’s the best way I can explain it using other anime as a reference.
Ever-changing mysterious landscapes. Two girls adventuring and bonding. Vibrant spectrum of colours depending on the environment.
Flip Flappers does all of these things extremely well.
To the point where just remembering many scenes makes me think “wow”.
I’ll describe my first “wow” moment. So I was watching the anime, and enjoying it. Cocona and Papika had met, and began adventuring into Pure Illusion, this sort of alternate universe. Everytime they go in, you never know what little “world” they will end up in. Each world within Pure Illusion is amazing. It’s just a great variety of environments and situations that the characters end up in.
Anyways, they were in this one world, fighting an enemy. I was already very impressed with the anime and what I had watched up until then. And then Cocona whips out this massive badass looking cannon. I immediately paused and took a screencap, naming it “wow”, which was the exact word going through my head.
Maybe not the most exciting story, but look at that picture! Amazing right? I knew there were transformations in the anime because the synopsis spoils this, but the anime still managed to surprise me. Magic girls can be pretty cool, something I have to keep reminding myself it seems.
That was my first “wow” moment.
But why stop there? I’ll tell you about my second “wow” moment.
Later on in the anime, I had experienced so much amazing content. Seriously, the different worlds of Pure Illusion are awesome. I love Pure Illusion even more than I loved the Abyss from Made in Abyss. I’ll try not to spoil many of the worlds, because I’d love for you to experience them as I did, having no clue what to expect. Especially the world we experience in the episode titled “Pure Echo”. Amazing.
Back to the story. My second “wow” moment actually spoils one of these worlds. So I apologize for that, but I hope that these moments help convince you to watch Flip Flappers. There is much more than what I am showing you here, I promise!
So our heroines enter Pure Illusion for the Nth time, and this is what we are treated to:
So much of the art in Flip Flappers just blows me away. Pure Illusion really is fantastic. This cyber metropolis is just beautiful – I’ve actually made it my desktop wallpaper. You just don’t know what type of worlds Cocona and Papika will end up in. It’s like Alice in Wonderland on steroids, and I love Alice in Wonderland.
But why stop there? Let’s get the third “wow” moment in here.
So our first moment was Cocona’s crazy cannon, and our second was the mind-blowing sci-fi cyber metropolis…
And our third is a certain super badass character. I won’t say anything more than that. Check this screencap out:
It doesn’t get better than that! Which is cooler, Cocona’s cannon or this? I’d have to say that it depends on my mood. Cause this character takes the cake when it comes to that edgy side of me. We need a Flip Flappers fighting game for awesome characters like this!
Those were my three big “wow” moments in Flip Flappers.
Is there anything else I need to say? If you haven’t seen Flip Flappers, add it to your list! There is much more waiting for you than just those three screencaps.
I also have some other screencaps to share here. Random ones though.
First is this cicada:
We get them here in Canada, but I guess Japan really admires them. Their job is basically to signal to you that it’s hot out. Just in case you don’t realize it yourself, out in the heat. Honestly, just hearing them makes me feel hot. I guess that’s the power of the Cicada.
Anyways I figured I’d share that Cicada. It’s getting cold now anyways, so we can admire them a little. Keep up the good work Cicada.
Second is this Raccoon wearing a scarf:
I just thought it was a cool picture. There is a lot of nature in Flip Flappers, many different animals and such.
We also get raccoons here in Canada. I used to hear them fighting all the time outside my window in high school. It’s a mix between fierce growling / screeching / whimpering.
Raccoon fights are very loud. Raccoons are very quiet skulkers of the night, until they get into a fight. Then the entire world will hear them. You can look it up if you want, it’s really loud! And the fights always occur in the middle of the night, so they will pretty much always wake you up.
Next is this cool dude standing next to a lamp:
I just think it’s a funny picture. I feel like the lamp shouldn’t be there, it looks out of place. The lamp just doesn’t blend well with the picture. It feels like one of those “hiding in plain sight” situations. The lamp also has this great 3d look to it, which makes the cool guy look more 2d. Either the lamp, or the cool guy needs to go for this picture to look right to me. I can’t help but think that someone put a lot of work into making that lamp look as good as it does.
I had a lot of fun watching Flip Flappers. Seriously, if this very unprofessional “review” doesn’t convince you, I don’t know what will. All of those screencaps should have been enough really.
Flip Flappers is one of those anime that I feel like I will look back on years from now and think “what a good anime!” when I see it on my anime list.
And you know what else I’ll think?
Hidden Gem #2!
I know it looks like I am giving away hidden gems like candy, but I can’t NOT grant this to Flip Flappers. I loved the anime too much, and I had no idea it existed prior to this A to Z challenge. I would never have found it if I wasn’t looking specifically for an F anime. It fits the requirements for a hidden gem perfectly.
Whether or not it was a fluke to watch two hidden gems in a row, I don’t know.
I guess we’ll find out soon enough! 20 letters to go!
Until next time!
Thanks for reading.
