I Love Anime with an Overpowered MC

I love anime with an overpowered main character. I love watching smug enemies get obliterated and humiliated by the main character. I love skipping the whole progression that characters generally go through to get stronger. I love knowing that no one will get in the main character’s way and that anyone who tries will not stand a chance. I love the surprise and reaction an enemy provides once they learn how powerful the main character is.

There’s just something so satisfying about all of this.

Would this be considered a guilty pleasure?

The face of true power: confidence.

I think it really just comes down to the raw satisfaction that the viewer experiences through the main character – right from the start we are on their side as we generally watch the story unfold from their perspective. Not only are we rooting for them, but we generally have an idea of what they are capable of, whereas their opponents may not be. And that’s where the real satisfaction comes into play – having that knowledge that other characters don’t.

This doesn’t only apply to overpowered MC anime either – plenty of anime (stories in general really) provide their audience with this sort of omnipotent information that individual characters in the story don’t possess. When the viewer has this information it creates this suspense or build up – “how will character X react when they find out?”, “I can’t wait to see how these characters react when they find out X”, or my favourite “that character thinks they can fight with the MC? I can’t wait to see their reaction when they experience the MC’s power”.

Now this isn’t the only draw to anime with an overpowered main character, but for me this is the biggest factor to explain my love for this style anime. Anyways, I wanted to give a few examples of anime that have an overpowered main character (there are many more than what you will see here). I know that there are lists of this style anime all over the internet (Personally, I’ve pretty much exhausted them all) so if you are a fan of this anime type you’ve likely seen them before. If you haven’t, check them out!

Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo

Mondaiji.jpgKeep an eye on Izayoi Sakamaki – this guy has seemingly no limits. Pretty much the definition of overpowered. Unfortunately this is anime did not get a second season! This is the anime that made me realize my love for overpowered main characters, which is why I’ll mention it first. Great anime though, short and sweet in this case (only 10 episodes).

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei

Mahouka.jpgTatsuya Shiba is pretty unstoppable in this one. When I first saw this one I didn’t even know this was an overpowered MC anime going into it. Tatsuya may not have godlike powers but his combat ability is second to none. The setting of this anime (magic high school) is pretty awesome too, making for a good watch overall.

Overlord

Overlord.jpgMomonga is basically a raid boss in this fantasy / virtual MMO style anime. It’s pretty neat to watch this anime fold from his perspective – especially considering he is a badass skeletal wizard. Not only does this anime have an overpowered MC, but it’s pretty refreshing and different from other anime in this setting. Second season was announced recently as well!

Mob Psycho 100

MobPsycho.jpgShigeo Kageyama, AKA Mob, is basically a psychic god in the body of a confused eighth grader. This anime has a lot more emphasis on comedy and is very similar in style to One Punch Man (also an overpowered MC, go watch it if you haven’t!). Overall a very fun take on the overpowered main character style.
